Branding NYC's plan for a more humane detention system

The Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform (the Lippman Commission) has been an influential leader in helping the City of New York move towards closing the jail complex on Rikers Island, improving the functioning of the criminal justice system, reducing the use of unnecessary incarceration, and encouraging the creation of a new detention system focused on rehabilitation and re-entry.

The challenge was to update the Commission’s website and social media presence, A More Just NYC, to visually reflect the same influence and importance. A logo, visual brand style guidelines, and a new website were created to inspire strength and a feeling of trust and responsibility, while humanizing the incarcerated — helping the Commission to engage with and inspire confidence from communities and audiences who may be resistant to change or risk.
